Tatu
Tatu
Tatu (2022) is a single room installation which bathes visitors in an array of intricate motifs of light and shadow, evoking scenes of Malaysia’s Wayang Kulit. The installation is presented as a dome with circular plates of elaborate patterns, extracted from the cultures of main ethnic groups in Malaysia – Malay, Chinese, Indian and Dayak. Detaching the patterned plates, the dome transforms into a stylised, human head, hoping that anyone who looks at the sculpture sees themselves. Tatu represents the diversity of the Malaysian community and all people regardless of their differences; judging none and celebrating all. Tatu reminds us that only through embracing our differences can we survive through times of conflict.
The title Tatu pays homage to the people of East Malaysia who often feel side-lined in the grand Malaysian setting.
